Engineering content performs best when it is useful to a researcher before it is optimised for a crawler. The following framework focuses on both technical quality and discoverability.
Use one stable page per main video
A project gallery is useful for browsing, but each important video should also have a dedicated URL where the video is the primary content. Give that page a unique title, description, H1, visible project summary and links to related work.
Keep video assets crawlable
Use stable MP4 and thumbnail URLs. Do not require a login or button click before the primary video and its description become available. The server should return the correct content type for MP4 and image files.
Add accurate VideoObject data
VideoObject markup should match the visible page and include the name, description, thumbnail URL, upload date, duration and either contentUrl or embedUrl. Do not add markup for a video that users cannot watch.
Maintain a video sitemap
Include each watch-page URL and the matching video metadata. Update the sitemap when a video is added or removed, then submit it through webmaster tools.
Measure indexing rather than guessing
Use URL Inspection, video indexing reports, server logs and Bing Webmaster Tools. A technically valid page can still need stronger original content and internal links before it performs well.
